2014 Eagle Scout Project

During the summer of 2014, photographs and transcriptions were collected for lots 1-367 as part of an Eagle Scout Project.  The scout was a member of Troop 230 in Penfield, NY chartered by the First Baptist Church of Penfield.

The following information was gathered and is now included in the online records for those lots.

  • Flag - Headstone:  was there a headstone at the lot and grave location - Yes/No
  • Photographs: if there was a headstone, one or more photos were take to capture the information on the headstone
  • Flag - Transcription: If there was a headstone, was that writing on the headstone - Yes/No
  • Flag - Transcription Condition: If there was a headstone and transcription, what was the condition of the words - Fully Readable, Partially Readable, Not Readable
  • Transcription: What writing was contained on the headstone - all sides.
  • Eagle Notes: Any notes from the process of gathering photos and transcription

The original cemetery records did not indicate if a family headstone existed in the lot, seperate from the individual gravestones.  As part of the Eagle Project, seperate records were created for each family headstone.  This was done becuase it most likely contains information relating to more than one grave, and possibly more than one lot in the cemetery.

A smartphone application was developed (iPhone/iPad/Android) to automate the collection process and make it easier for all volunteers to collect the information.  39 volunteers participated in the project volunteering 476 hours.  2,950 graves where visited resulting in 2,012 photographcs and 1,313 transcriptions.  The final result is this website with all the data collected.
